What is Aikido? (eye-key-doe)
Aikido is a nonviolent, self-defensive martial art that
teaches you how to protect yourself by using an
attacker's force, size and strength against themselves.
Aikido training involves both physical and mental
conditioning. Physically, Aikido practice increases
one's strength, stamina, balance, flexibility,
coordination, and resilience. Aikido's mental
conditioning increases one's self-confidence,
concentration, alertness, intuitiveness, & general
concern for others. Aikido teaches practitioners how
to reduce stress, avoid confrontations, and stay calm
during every type of adversity common in our daily
lives. In learning Aikido, you will become secure in
knowing how to protect yourself and others with
proven and traditional martial art techniques.

Do I have to wear protective gear when
practicing Aikido?

No. Because there is never any form of force meeting
force, such as a punch meeting a block, protective
padding is never needed to train safely in aikido.

I have a chronic injury. Can I still learn Aikido?
Yes! Aikido training is tailored to the student's
individual needs. Individuals with chronic injuries can
learn Aikido with simple training modifications
designed to meet their physical abilities.

Will Aikido help me lose weight?
Yes! Aikido is a form of cardiovascular movement that
will increase your heart rate and burn calories when
accompanied by a healthy diet.
Is Aikido difficult to learn?
No! Just like learning an instrument or becoming
proficient in a sport, Aikido takes practice. Our
instructors are taught to challenge each student to their
own level of ability making the learning process
enjoyable for all. It is JSA's goal to successfully teach
every student who wants to learn Aikido. All you have to
do is come to class and be ready to learn.

What is class like?
Each class consists of stretching, warm-up exercises,
aikido techniques and drills, and depending on how
young you are, aikido related games for physical and
character development. Please see our program page
for age specific class information.

Is Aikido a contact martial art?
The martial art of Aikido is based on the concept of
blending with an attacker's force. Therefore,
practitioners never strike each other, but instead learn
how to avoid an attack . Young children practice
technique only on adult instructors and assistant
instructors. As children grow older, they learn how to
practice with their peers. Adults are partnered with a
senior student to be guided through class.
Through both physical and spiritual training,
O Sensei realized true victory did not involve winning
at the expense of others. After drawing this
conclusion, O Sensei developed the harmonious but
effective martial art, Aikido.
O Sensei continued to practice Aikido till his death at
age 86 after which he was declared by the Japanese
government to be a Sacred National Treasure of
Japan. Chapman Sensei, JSA's Chief Instructor,
trains directly under one of O Sensei's original
apprentices or uchideshi, Yamada Sensei.
JSA is a member of the United States Aikido
Federation.
